A JOURNEY INTO THE MINING PAST OF LA ARBOLEDA
Activity: Guided Tour
Location: La Arboleda, Bizkaia
Description of Activity: The mining area of La Arboleda, already recorded in Roman times, became Europe’s leading iron ore deposit at the end of the 19th century. There were several advantages of Bizkaia’s mines: plentiful and high-quality ore, open pit operations, year-round possibility of extraction and a strategic location near the coast.
This tour will give us an insight into the type of mining performed, the working conditions, the different types of iron and some of the remains that were once used for transporting and mining the ore. We’ll finish in La Arboleda, an iconic mining town where we’ll see some of the buildings that exemplified the social context of this important mining past. And all of this framed in a very unique natural environment in the Basque Country.
