ILLUSTRIOUS VILLAS OF GETXO

Activity: Guided and dramatised tours

Location: Getxo, Bizkaia

Description of Activity: The tour starts off at the Vizcaya Bridge, the oldest transporter bridge in the world and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. Next to the Vizcaya Bridge we’ll see the monument to Churruca, the first ever director of the Port Engineering Board, and then we’ll walk along the so-called Paseo de las Grandes Villas on the waterfront, admiring the most iconic buildings of Getxo’s palatial architecture period (late 19th century and early 20th century).
The opulent villas on Muelle de Las Arenas and Marqués de Arriluze are a reflection of this era of economic splendour in Vizcaya’s history. The bourgeoisie wanted their homes to showcase the importance of their wealth and their social status, in many cases linked to the industrial development of the province. All of them have a significant historical and artistic value, and were built by Basque architects.
