THE ESTUARY, A LIVING STAGE

Activity: Active Tour

Location: Bilbao – Santurtzi, Bizkaia

Description of Activity: Boat trip along the Nervión estuary guided by the architect Iñaki Uriarte. The tour starts at the Pío Baroja pier in Bilbao (opposite the Town Hall) and ends at the Port of Santurtzi (near public transport stops). During the cruise, our guide will explain the history and the most important characteristics of each of the industrial resources located on the banks of the estuary, some of which are in disuse, while others are still in operation:
«You can’t claim to see, or admire, Bilbao without understanding the multiple meanings of its estuary. Recent developments and future proposals (river dredging, Abandoibarra, Guggenheim, Euskalduna, Metro, bridges, riverside walks and Zorrotzaurre) are consequences of territorial structures and industrial decline that will set out to incorporate the estuary into the city, not just as a sequence of public spaces and recreational facilities, but also as an industrial channel for certain urban and environmentally-friendly activities. In short, the estuary is a story and list of pre- and post-existences, mutilations and disappearances. Melancholy and utopia; landscape and tribute. The estuary is ours and is a homage to the iron & steel industry».
