THE LANDSCAPE OF IRON EXTRACTION. THE MUTILOA MINING RESERVE

Activity: Guided Tour

Location: Mutiloa, Gipuzkoa

Description of Activity: Iron ore from Mutiloa has since medieval times been the main supplier of ironworks in the upper basins of the Urola and Oria rivers. From the end of the 19th century until 1927, the Compañía Minera de Mutiloa used the latest technology of the era to implement an organised and systematic extraction process. To achieve this, the firm built the necessary infrastructures close to the areas of extraction to meet the demands of the new production system. All of this can be seen in today’s landscape, which is also surrounded by nature. The railway line, now converted into a greenway, had a length of 4.539 km and would transport the ore to the Ormaiztegi station and then on to the port of Pasaia, from where it would be shipped to European steel mills. A complex mineral processing system was formed by at least three washing plants: Mañastegizar, Troi and Barnaola. Together with this system, up to thirteen decanting ponds were built, which prevented dirty water from reaching the Oria River along the Troi River. A pleasant signposted walk will take us to these places to discover the mining landscape of Mutiloa.
