THE SOCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL LANDSCAPE OF THE LEFT BANK AND THE BASQUE COUNTRY

Activity: Film Screening & Debate

Location: Barakaldo, Bizkaia

Description of Activity: Screening and discussion about the industrial past of the Left Bank. Alfredo Retortillo (Counselor of Tourism, Trade and Consumption of the Basque Government) will present the activity. Later the 82-minute documentary La Epopeya Industrial Vasca (The Heyday of Basque Industry) will be screened: «150 years of success, but also of failures. Of ups and downs, of triumphs and crises, but above all, of a joint effort and determination to make headway that has placed the Basque Country at the level of other European countries. Since the first modern companies began to replace ironworks in 1843, industry in the Basque Country has never stopped growing and changing». A documentary directed by Antonio Cristóbal, with scripts written by the financial journalists Charo Ponte and José María Gutiérrez Robredo.

We’ll then watch the 30-minute documentary Crónicas Migrantes (Migrant Chronicles), produced by Ruth Briones: «In Vizcaya, there’s work for everyone». With this promise, thousands of workers flocked to the Left Bank at the height of the iron & steel industry boom. Residents of Barakaldo, Sestao, Portugalete and Santurce will tell us what life was like in those years and how everything changed with the advent of the so-called industrial reconversion.

The event will end with a colloquium in which Harkaitz Millán (Director of Basquetour), the two filmmakers and former workers from the area will participate.
