VITORIA, INDUSTRIAL CITY

Activity: Active Tour

Location: Vitoria – Gasteiz, Araba

Description of Activity: Vitoria is currently the Basque city with the most industrial activity. Although it already had a certain manufacturing tradition, the industrialisation that turned it into a true hub gained strength from 1950s onwards. And even though at the moment it only has certain examples left, due to the lack of an official policy on the preservation of industrial heritage, industry in Vitoria can be better explained through urban planning. In essence, the tour will highlight a fundamental part of the city’s history, unknown by its own citizens, but which led to the Vitoria that we all know today. There will also be archive photographs shown at specific locations, comparing past and present. We’ll visit the Gamarra-Betoño industrial estate, the former premises of Forjas Alavesas, the Zaramaga neighbourhood, and the Michelin plant from the outside.
